Part-Time Program Assistant for Virginia Office

The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, a regional non-profit organization based in Annapolis, Maryland with offices in Virginia and Pennsylvania, is seeking an energetic and creative person to assist with implementation of our RiverTrends and RiverWise Education programs. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay was founded in 1971. Since its beginning, the Alliance has been in the forefront of restoration efforts in the watershed. The Alliance’s core mission is to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers by building partnerships, engaging communities to find collaborative solutions, and connecting people to the Bay and its rivers. The Alliance also leads a wide array of on-the-ground restoration projects.

Job Description:

The Program Assistant will need to be an enthusiastic and independent worker, with skills in water quality monitoring and education and outreach. This part time position is for 20 hours/week at a rate of $18.00-20.00/hour and will include prorated leave for holiday, sick and vacation time. We envision transitioning this position to full-time within the next six to nine months, if not sooner.

Major activities and responsibilities of this position are as follows:

1. Assisting with RiverWise Education Program implementation:
a. Assist with development of green infrastructure plan for school campus
b. Work with school teachers to integrate stormwater management into science curriculum
c. Develop hands on education events at school to teach children about installing and maintaining stormwater practices
d. Work with partners to integrate curriculum into Green Team activities as students prepare for transition to high school
e. Develop training workshop for teachers
f. Develop pre- and post-education survey for students

2. RiverTrends:
a. Tracking and reporting for RiverTrends grants
b. Recruit volunteers for participation in program
c. Coordinate and lead volunteer trainings
d. Ordering/Maintaining supplies for volunteers
e. Collecting and reviewing water quality data submitted by volunteers
f. Developing report cards

3. Assisting with general office needs/activities:
a. Participate in VA Office staff meetings and bi-weekly staff calls
b. Participate in local meetings such as Middle James Roundtable, James River Advisory Council, etc…
c. Answering phones
d. Checking mail

Qualifications:

– Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in natural resource management, watershed management, environmental science, or similar field of study preferred
– Knowledge of water quality monitoring parameters and techniques
– Knowledge of trees and plants native to Virginia and knowledge of basic landscaping principles
– Excellent outreach and communication and presentation skills
– Experience teaching or conducting presentations – Proficient in MS Office, Adobe Creative Suite, ArcGIS, and WordPress
