The AFF Educator leads and teaches environmental education field studies to students, grades K-12, of the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The Instructor will work in the two environmental education programs of the Alice Ferguson Foundation: Hard Bargain Farm (grades K-6) and Bridging the Watershed (grades 6-12) dependent upon our programming needs.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary Responsibility:
Teaching standard-aligned, curriculum-based, outdoor field studies to students grades K-6 at Hard Bargain Farm or at participating schools in an outreach capacity and/or students grades 6-12 at regional national parks.
Secondary Responsibilities:
Prepare employer-supplied equipment and materials necessary for teaching.
Communicate with staff, teachers, or rangers in preparing field studies.
Record and collect programming data as needed.
Assist with teacher workshops and other educational opportunities as needed.
Participate in occasional special events such as: Oktoberfest, Spring Farm Festival, PRWC, member events and other AFF-sponsored events as needed.
Participate in staff development, including staff meetings and trainings as needed.
Assist supervisor, Education Manager, and/or Executive Director as needed.
SCOPE OF WORK:
This position requires actively working and teaching children outdoors in natural surroundings under various environmental conditions. The person must be able to lift at least 25 lbs. and have reliable transportation to national park locations and/or school locations as needed in the greater DC metropolitan area. Mileage reimbursement is available to park and school locations.
EDUCATION & SKILLS:
Experience teaching and/or working with children and/or adolescents
Excellent communication, organizing, and problem-solving skills
Excellent in coordinating group dynamics
Reliable, responsible, able to work independently and as part of a team, and able to problem solve creatively
Currently certified in adult First Aid and CPR (or contingent upon employment)
Subject to criminal background/fingerprinting check due to working with children
Comfort in working in natural, outdoor settings
Associate or Bachelor Degree (preferred) (Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Natural Sciences, Science Education, Elem./Sec. Education, Agricultural Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or related fields ) OR equivalent level of work experience in related field
