Summary of Position
The Land Manager job under general direction of Allegheny Land Trust’s Director of Volunteer and Land Resources manages lands owned and maintained by ALT. Approximately 2,500 acres protected by ALT are in constant need of monitoring, maintenance, upgrades, and other support. Stewardship activities include basic maintenance and carpentry, wildlife management, forest management and chainsaw work, controlling invasive and non-native plant species through determined applications, managing public access including posting and securing property boundaries, trail design and implementation, parking situations, and long-range planning.
Essential Functions
• Communicating with ALT staff, partners, landowners and neighbors is an essential function of caring for lands. Ensure that all boundaries of ALT owned, and managed lands are well marked and posted, as necessary; and maintain good relations with bordering property owners.
• Coordinate field mowing and property maintenance improvements on all ALT lands.
• Maintain over 15 miles of trails; clear blow-downs, refresh blazes, upgrade wetland crossings.
• Proper care and maintenance of ALT Stewardship tools including ALT Truck (Chevy Silverado 2400HD), small engines (lawn mower, weed whacker, power drills and other) trail building tools, shovels, wheelbarrow etc.
• Regularly monitor all ALT-owned and managed lands; maintain documentation of conservation values using reports, maps, photographs, notes and other permanent records.
• Provide coordination of land management volunteer activities with Volunteer Director.
• Implement compliance with all ALT management plans.
• In cooperation with PA Game Commission manage the hunting program on ALT lands. Develop and maintain good relations with hunters and post affected properties for program specifics during different seasons.
• Regularly inspect all trails and structures for damage, vandalism or theft and report/repair same.
• Manage, update, and maintain all infrastructure on fee properties including signage, kiosks, parking areas, fences, benches, bridges, etc.
• Ensure that all trails are well marked with appropriate signage and trail maps up to date along with identifying and implementation of trail condition.
Desirable Qualifications
Candidates should be able to perform physically demanding outdoor work in all seasons and be creative in ability to foster solutions to problems. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in construction, chainsaw and power equipment usage, small engine repair, land stewardship or outdoor recreation areas/trails management. Applicants must have valid PA driver’s license and reliable transportation. Approximately 20 hours per week.
