This position will report directly to the Park Administrator, Carrie Murray Nature Center, Gwynns Falls Leakin Park. The Hiking Programmer is responsible for leading Baltimore City school students and recreation center participants on guided hikes through the natural surface trails and along the multi-use Gwynns Falls Trail in Gwynns Falls Leakin Park (GFLP). GFLP is the second largest urban wilderness in the United States. The Hiking Programmer will be responsible for translating the wonder and beauty of this site to youth hiking program participants through guided activities. Training will be provided. Hiking Programmer will be responsible for the organization, implementation and evaluation of the “Every Kid in the Park” grant that provides transportation costs to bring 4th graders to GFLP for hiking programs in 2016. Hiking Programs may also be coordinated for adult and senior citizen groups but the primary focus for the seasonal hiking program will be youth.

The ideal candidate will serve as an advocate, proactively promoting recreational hiking activities of a high quality for all citizens of Baltimore City. The successful candidate must demonstrate his/her ability to engage the public and communicate effectively with all skill and age groups. He/she must have solid customer service, public speaking skills and display enthusiasm. This is an outdoor and very physical position.

Education and Experience

Possession of a GED or High school Diploma is required.
An Associate’s Degree in Recreation/Leisure Management or a related field is highly desirable.
Qualified candidates must have a minimum of 1 year experience of leading recreational activities
Basic First Aid Certification is desired. Attendance at a certification course will be required.
Must have the knowledge and skill to walk for long distances & be willing to work in an outdoor park setting in a variety of weather.
He/she must have solid customer service and will be working directly with the public.
Knowledge of physical fitness/ health is a plus.
A valid MD Class C driver’s license or an equivalent out-of-state driver’s license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is desired.
Compensation and Benefits

A negotiable hiring range of $10-$12 hourly is available depending on the background and qualifications of the successful candidate.
Beginning April 15 – ending October 31, 2016. Spring and Fall hours 20 – 35 hours per week, Summer hours – 35-40 hours per week.
