About Trout Unlimited

Today, Trout Unlimited is a national organization with more than 150,000 volunteers organized into about 400 chapters nationwide. This dedicated grassroots army is matched by a respected staff of organizers, lawyers, policy experts and scientists, who work out of more than 30 offices. Our mission is to conserve, protect and restore North America’s coldwater fisheries and their watersheds.

Position Summary

Trout Unlimited (TU) is seeking a qualified individual to serve as its Field Crew Leader from May to October 2017 for Pennsylvania Coldwater Habitat Restoration Program. TU’s Pennsylvania Coldwater Habitat Restoration Program targets the improvement of coldwater habitat viability and availability for native brook trout across the commonwealth. To accomplish this, TU staff work to improve water quality through abandoned coal mine cleanup; reduce non-point source sediment pollution through streambank stabilization, riparian reforestation, installation of instream habitat structures, and improvement of dirt and gravel roads; and increase flood resiliency and aquatic organism passage through addressing problematic road-stream crossings. The Field Crew Leader position is based out of TU’s field office in Lock Haven, PA and will report directly to the Field and Research Manager for daily work tasks, but will coordinate and work on projects as a team member with all staff.

Duties and Responsibilities

· Coordinate/schedule field work with staff, interns, and project partners.
· Ensure coordination among project partners and private landowners.
· Oversee a team of 2-3 interns.
· Ensure proper sampling and safety protocols are followed.
· Ensure projects are completed in a timely manner.
· Collect field data through activities such as electrofishing, benthic macroinvertebrate surveys, water quality sampling, and fish habitat surveys.
· Provide data entry and database management, as well as prepare maps and write reports.
· Attend meetings of TU chapters, watershed groups, and other partnering groups as needed.
· Provide assistance to other program staff as needed.

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field.
· Experience with chemical and biological surveys such as water quality sampling, electrofishing, and benthic macroinvertebrate sampling.
· Willingness to travel (frequently overnight) and be capable of hiking and carrying equipment in difficult terrain and working in inclement conditions and remote locations.
· Proficient with Microsoft Office and GIS mapping programs.
· Excellent interpersonal skills.
· Ability to work independently and take initiative.
· Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
· Familiarity with field sampling gear and have ability to troubleshoot in the field.
· A valid driver’s license and vehicle.
· Passion for protecting and restoring trout populations and their watersheds
