The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, a five-time National Recreation and Parks Association Gold Medal Award winner, is seeking a Facility Director to manage the day to day operations for its 7,000+ acre Patuxent River Park. This nature based facility, located 40 minutes outside of Washington DC, and provides interpretative programs, recreational activities (camping, boating, fishing, canoe & kayak rentals), natural and historical resource management, environmental research, and watershed protection.
Patuxent River Park is comprised of several properties along 55 miles of the Patuxent River. It is governed by a “limited use” policy to ensure park activities are compatible with the natural resources and preserve the scenic character of the river. Park headquarters are located in Upper Marlboro at the 2000+ acre Jug Bay Natural Area- a designated National Estuarine Research and Reserve System site under the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) with a focus in research and environmental education. It is also a designated “Green Center” by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education. The chosen candidate is expected to utilize these designations to their fullest potential.This position supervises two full time naturalists, five full time maintenance employees, and 25+ part time/seasonal staff that vary throughout the year.
Job functions include nature-based facility management, budget management, environmental education program development for a primarily urban audience, administrative activities, natural and historical resource management, partnering with outside agencies (including NOAA and Maryland Department of Natural Resources), community outreach, event planning, and facilitation of environmental research internally and with partner agencies.
