Environmental Instructor Position Summary:

The Environmental Instructor (E .I.) position is a seasonal, part-time position responsible for carrying out the educational mission of the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance (BRC) through meaningful standards-based lessons with an emphasis on hands-on field activities that demonstrate the interconnectedness of living organisms and the watershed on which they rely. Student programs offered by BRC range from ages 3 through 18. During the primary education season in the spring and fall, average hours for an E.I. range from 3 – 20 hours per week depending on time commitment and experience level.

Position Reports To:
Education Coordinator

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Participate in a minimum of 15 hours of volunteer program observation and/or team teaching before teaching a program independently
• Participate in seasonal training and professional development opportunities
• Arrive on time and prepared to teach
• Enthusiastically lead variety environmental education programs while fulfilling the program goals and standards outlined in the lesson plans
• Organize, setup and cleanup program supplies before and after scheduled programs in allotted time
• Willingness to learn new content and expand personal limitations
• Communicate program or property needs with Education Coordinator when necessary
• Adhere to “BRC Core Competencies for Job Performance:”
o Teamwork and cooperation
o Personal motivation
o Flexibility
o Conservation-minded

Position Qualifications:

• At least 18 years of age with high school degree
• Experience in science, natural history or education
• Effective management and oral communication skills
• Willingness to teach outdoors in inclement weather conditions
• Ability to hike in varying terrain for long distances while carrying tools/supplies needed for programs
• Flexibility to work in a variety of situations, and adapt to last minute changes
• Work in a team-based atmosphere
• Exhibit patience and understanding for diverse groups of learners
• Current PA clearances to work with students
