Job Description

The position offers the challenge of accurately presenting complex information in engaging ways, the opportunity for initiative and creativity, and a key role in promoting conservation in Pennsylvania. The position reports directly to the executive director. Duties include:

Administer mass communications

  • Ensure optimal timing and frequency of communications and choice and coordination of communications channels (social media, email, web, etc.)
  • Develop and maintain communications plans
  • Strategically implement plans and otherwise produce communications
  • Coordinate with staff on securing content and understanding opportunities and needs for communication
  • Regularly monitor, analyze, and report on key metrics for each communications channel
  • Consistently keep abreast of best communications practices and adjust PALTA’s strategies and tactics to optimize its reach

Produce and manage content for social media, emails, web, and other communications channels

  • Solicit, find, secure, create, and publish content for all of PALTA’s communications channels
  • Review draft communications by other staff and edit, rewrite, or provide suggestions as appropriate before finalizing
  • Ensure that communications are consistent with PALTA’s style and written to professional standards
  • Ensure that the homepages of ConserveLand.org and GreenwaysandTrails.org are consistently fresh and relevant; ensure that no publicly facing PALTA website appears disused; adjust design and layout of websites and manage contractor upgrades as needed
  • Manage news headline service content for posting to websites every workday
  • Reach out and serve as liaison to the media, pushing out content to increase positive conservation coverage and responding to inquiries

Create content of various lengths for various audiences using various mediums and researching and analyzing issues as appropriate to support this creation

  • Compelling stories of the transformative effects of conservation
  • pieces on the value of public investments in conservation and other public policy matters
  • Essays making the case for conservation from a variety of perspectives—ethical, patriotic, economic, health, spiritual, and more
  • Articles on topics of interest to land trust professionals and volunteers
  • ConservationTools.org guides
  • General educational materials that follow from PALTA’s technical research and analysis
  • Messaging materials in conjunction with PALTA’s advocacy on public policy matters
  • Infographics, web banners, and other written and graphic materials optimized for use with appropriate media

Other

  • Lead and facilitate efforts to develop programming for multi-day training events
  • Develop marketing materials for multi-day training events
  • Support Growing Greener Coalition efforts as part of the PALTA management team
  • Assist with ensuring the smooth operation of PALTA events
  • Make calls to mobilize grassroots action when critical issues arise
  • Team with PALTA staff on developing and implementing marketing strategies
  • Present at workshops and otherwise share knowledge and expertise as appropriate for advancing conservation
  • Represent PALTA in presentations and other forums as assigned
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned by the executive director
  • Share menial and other tasks concomitant with a small office environment

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional writing skills
  • Strong editing skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Solid research skills
  • Enthusiastic self-starter; outstanding creativity, and resourcefulness
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and social media platforms
  • Proficiency in WordPress websites or ability to quickly gain proficiency
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member in a small office environment
  • Personal commitment to conservation
  • Bachelors degree
  • A substantial body of writing that PALTA may review

Desired (though not required) qualifications include strong proofreading abilities, comfort with desktop publishing software, and graphic design and layout skills.

The position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and excellent benefits. It is a full-time position.
