Trailability: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access on Recreational Trails in Pennsylvania

September 22, 2020 10am-Noon via Zoom

WeConservePA is pleased to be working with Tykee James, Environmental Leadership Program senior fellow and organizer of #BlackBirdersWeek to convene a panel of trails and recreation professionals, GIS users, and outdoor enthusiasts to discuss topics of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Justice and Access as related to recreational trails in Pennsylvania. Panelists will share their unique perspective on the social, physical and cultural barriers to trail access that trail planners and managers need to consider when programming and communicating about their trails. A short presentation by each panelist will be followed by a moderated Q&A, and time for break-out rooms to further explore these issues. Participants should come prepared to learn and share ideas, challenges and success stories. This is a safe space to share thoughts and feelings related to issues connected to the current civil unrest.

Panelists & Presentations:
  • Tykee James, [Presentation] Senior Fellow, Environmental Leadership Program, board member Wyncote Audubon, and organizer of #BlackBirdersWeek.
  • Larry Knutson, [Presentation] principal, PennTrails Inc, author of Universal Access Trails and Shared Use Pathways
  • Taiji Nelson, [Presentation] Senior Programs Manager, Climate and Rural Systems Partnership with the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and North American Association for Environmental Educators 30 under 30, class of 2018.
  • Virginia Rose, [Presentation] [Handout: Access and Steps to Implementation] Board member, Travis Audubon (Austin), founder of the Birdability Initiative.
