Fly fishing retailer Orvis-Pittsburgh has awarded a $3,000 Conservation Grant to Hollow Oak Land Trust to support of habitat restoration on Meeks Run, one of the cleanest streams in Allegheny County. Although it supports 25 species fish, Meeks Run suffers from urban stormwater runoff, invasive species, and unstable stream banks.
With support from the Orvis grant, Hollow Oak is improving habitat, educating adjacent landowners, and planting trees to stabilize stream banks and provide cooling shade. This summer, Orvis staff provided fly fishing instruction to the Moon Area middle school students of Mr. Frank Todd’s science class as part of the annual Trout in the Classroom release of fingerling brook trout.
