Heritage Conservancy Preserves 76 Acres in Quakertown Swamp

11/02/2018

Heritage Conservancy is happy to announce that the Herrmann property, a 76-acre property located along Rich Hill Road in the heart of the Quakertown Swamp in Richland Township, is now preserved in perpetuity. This preservation success was 15 years in the making, and its completion means that a vital keystone piece of the Quakertown Swamp is now protected.

Considered a high priority for preservation in the Nockamixon–Haycock Conservation Landscape Area, the Herrmann property contains approximately 35% of the overall great blue heron rookery in the entire swamp. The property also consists of early successional oak–mixed hardwood palustrine forest, open meadows, prime agricultural land, wetlands and a portion of Bog Run.

The Herrmann property is located on the outskirts of the Borough of Quakertown and is located in very close proximity to existing residential subdivisions. The property has relatively flat topography and has road access along West Paletown Road. These features, had a conservation easement not been placed on the property, would have made the property highly desirable for development.

Located close to other preserved properties, including the Berger Farm, state game lands, and Heritage Conservancy’s recently preserved Khindri Nature Preserve, this linkage strengthens the natural resources in the area.

This preservation success was made possible thanks to funding from Richland Township and the Bucks County Agricultural Land Preservation Program. The Calvin Ruth Memorial Fund, a legacy gift left for Heritage Conservancy by a dedicated supporter, contributed gap funding that was needed to help make this preservation happen.
